Fort Monroe
Fort Monroe will close permanently in September 2011. Fort Monroe – Federal Area Development Authority (FMFADA) has held organized sessions to determine the future of the location and to get citizen’s ideas for the future of Fort Monroe. This committee has been organized to include representatives from local, state, and federal governments, as well as local citizens, to discuss some possibilities for the re-use of Fort Monroe.

Virginia School for the Deaf, Blind, and Multi-Disabled
Negotiations are under way with the City of Hampton and the General Services Administration (GSA) of the Commonwealth of Virginia to discuss the use of the seventy-five (75) acres. The city may have the option to purchase fifty (50) acres. Twenty-five (25) may be deeded to Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board for two (2) dormitories.

Dredging
Dredging of the Hampton Channels, its auxiliary channels, Back River Creek, and Factory Point has already begun. In addition, jetties will be built in Factory Point to help control the amount of tidal surges.

Greater Peninsula Workforce Development and Consortium
This organization is funded by different businesses and organizations in the seven surrounding municipalities, James City County, Gloucester, Hampton, Poquoson, Williamsburg, Newport News and Yorktown. It is organized to train employees of businesses within these localities to enhance their abilities to improve the output of employee performance. It is housed at Thomas Nelson Community College. This program offers a variety of training courses that continues to improve the quality of education and capabilities for those seeking work and those that are still employed.
Transportation
Hampton is a member of the Hampton Roads Planning District Commission (HRPDC)–Transportation Planning Organization (TPO) which is made up of seventeen cities and counties. All plans for major arteries, bridges, tunnels, and main highway systems are reviewed by them. After review of the plans, recommendations for improvement or expansion are given to the Department of Transportation of the State or Federal Government. These organizations and the Hampton Director of Transportation together ensure that the transportation system is kept in the best possible condition to serve our communities. Hampton’s vision of the future involves light rail, fuel efficient buses as well as an efficient water transit system for Hampton Roads.
